Chemical Engineering


Curricula of the program “Engineering and Informatics in Chemical and Biochemical Processes (EICBP)” is so conceived to assure a general training in chemical engineering; an important place has been reserved to unit operations: transport and mixing of fluids; thermal transfer; separation of homogeneous, or heterogeneous mixtures; chemical or biochemical reactions. Such operations are typical in the so-called process industries (chemical and petrochemical productions, pharmaceutics, food processing or cellulose and paper manufacture. Lectures start from specific physical and chemical features, continue with equations and computation procedures and end with scale-up and the technological design for equipment and installations. Beside these components, other related disciplines (principles in automatics; thermal integration for efficient use of energy; optimization techniques applied for the design and operation of equipment.) are taught. Elementary biochemistry and microbiology are also presented, to facilitate understanding the specificity of biochemical processes.

A significant part consists in acquiring skills associated with the use of computers for scientific calculations, design graphics, or various informatics products (process simulation, industrial graphics – i.e. Autocad etc).

It should be mentioned that the present curricula are similar and compatible with those from abroad universities, which are fully recognized for higher education in chemical engineering.

Acquired skills and abilities

The EICBP programs the following competences and abilities for graduates:
• The ability to use their fundamental education in chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology, together with the engineering knowledge so that to understand the basic principles specific to chemical and biochemical industries.
• The capability to proceed to analyses of technological processes based on mass and energy balances; the aim is to identify and improve the operational policies, taking into account all restrictions coming from safety and environment protection.
• The capacity to perform preliminary calculations in technological design and maneuver specific equipment in unit operations (separation by distillation, absorption, extraction, filtration, decantation; equipment for drying; heat exchangers; evaporators; transport of solids and liquids; chemical and biochemical reactors).
• Proficiency in using informatics tools (technical and scientific tools; process simulators; programs for economic analysis) applied to chemical and biochemical processes.
• Easy integration in multidisciplinary teams; awareness of the responsibility of engineers toward society.

Employment opportunities

As they are proficient both in physic-chemical principles as well as in unit operations, the graduates of EICBP may definitely adapt to the requirements of jobs associated with equipment operations in various industries (chemical, petrochemical, biochemical, paper, cellulose, food etc).

The fact that beside a solid background in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the graduates acquired elements of informatics and mathematical models make possible for them to get jobs in technological development or software in engineering.

Furthermore, the graduates may work in other domains such as pre-university education, various business linked to process industries, insurances, legislation in copyright, administration etc.

Further professional development of graduation

The graduates can continue their studies for a M.Sci. degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biotechnologies, environment engineering and so on.

Human resources and logistics for student education

The program is supervised by Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.

The education activity is carried out by academic staff from the faculty of Applied Chemistry and Material Science; yet, the specialty disciplines are taught by the academic staff from the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. Numerous of them are fully recognized personalities, both on national, or international level. Practical training takes place in one of the four specialized laboratories of the department, namely: Transport Phenomena and Unit Operations; Chemical and Biochemical Reactors; Chemical and Biochemical Unit Operations; Modelling and Simulation of Chemical and Biochemical Processes. The department has an adequate logistics both for the didactic process as well as for research purposes; all laboratories use a common computer web.
