Master of Science Degree Programs - Science and Engineering of Advanced Oxide Materials and Nanomaterials

Domain

Chemical Engineering

Type

For deepening/For advanced research

Presentation

The curriculum of the Science and Engineering of Advanced Oxide Materials and Nanomaterials master's program aims to ensure a deepening and, at the same time, a diversification of basic knowledge acquired by students from the Science and Engineering of Oxide Materials and Nanomaterials undergraduate program. However, the program is also open to students who have graduated from other programs in the field of Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Environmental Engineering.

Acquired skills and abilities

The curriculum of the Science and Engineering of Advanced Oxide Materials and Nanomaterials master's program has been designed as a natural succession and in accordance with the disciplines studied in the Science and Engineering of Oxide Materials and Nanomaterials undergraduate program. It is also designed to additionally develop cognitive and experimental professional skills. In this way, the ability to actively learn, to understand technological solutions and to make decisions based on logical, creative and critical thinking will be developed. After completing this master’s program, the students will also develop the ability to understand technical requirements and propose solutions, the ability to work in a team and to collaborate with specialists from other fields.

Graduates of this master will acquire, from a professional point of view, the following competencies:
- in the field of structure and properties of micromaterials and nanomaterials - competencies related to both in-depth aspects, such as those related to structural features, surfaces, interfaces and correlations composition - structure (microstructure) - properties, as well as experimental aspects to investigate the composition, structure and properties of micro and nanomaterials by modern methods of analysis;
- knowledge and understanding of the field of unconventional routes for the synthesis and processing of micro- and nanomaterials in various forms such as: 0-D nanomaterials (nanopowders), 1-D (fibers and nanotubes), 2-D (thin films and thick layers), 3-D nanostructured ceramics and heterostructures, intended for top uses imposed by the tendency of miniaturization;
- the ability to know the particularities of processing, as well as the way in which the various stages of processing must be conducted depending on the type of product to be obtained and its predetermined properties;
- the ability to predict the properties of a material, including its behavior before manufacture;
- the ability to deeply understand the connections between the structure and the properties of a material, for the prediction of properties for materials in all their transformation stages;
- knowing and understanding, in the current trend, the 3 R’s (recovery, recycling, reuse), by obtaining interesting information on important aspects related to waste recovery and energy recovery;
- knowledge and understanding of the essential elements, regarding the type, specific compositional and structural characteristics, functional and processing particularities, for advanced oxide materials: bottles and glass ceramics, high-performance binder materials and geopolymers, micro and nanocomposites, intelligent multifunctional materials etc.;
- the ability to creatively apply research and innovation techniques in the field of advanced oxide materials and nanomaterials;
- ability to develop and support scientific communications and specialized research reports.

Employment opportunities

Our graduates can work in:
- companies from the cement, lime, ceramics and glass industries, testing laboratories, factory laboratories, concrete plants, aggregates, etc. The related industries are all privately owned, many of which belong to multinationals that offer attractive employment and professional development opportunities;
- research institutes.

There are cases, not few, when our graduates build a small / medium production business or specialize through bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies to optimize their own business.

Our students already come in contact with the research / production activity during the technological practice, which takes place in factories and in specialized research institutes in Bucharest and in the country.

Further professional development of graduation

Through the Science and Engineering of Advanced Oxide Materials and Nanomaterials master's program, it is also envisioned to ensure a higher level of training of graduates in this field, which will facilitate their doctoral studies afterwards. Graduates of these training stages will have professional skills that will allow them to integrate into research activities - in specialized units or in higher education.

Human resources and logistics for student education

The SIMONa department includes teachers with a high professional competence, acquired in numerous years of teaching and research activity, who continue the tradition of the School of Chemistry and Silicate Technology, founded over 50 years ago by Professor Serban Solacolu.

The teaching staff is focused on promoting scientific research, technological development and educational innovation programs, carried out through national or international cooperation. Currently there are partnerships with prestigious universities in France, Germany, the Netherlands.

The material base in the department allows a professional training at European level and consists in state-of-the-art endowments and equipment worth over 3 million euros.
